Madalena-Berlin is a female Theatre of the Oppressed group and collective of activists from KURINGA (Berlin), founded in 2011. With several Forum Theatre plays, the group stimulates public debates about the oppressions faced by women, and dynamizes the search for concrete alternatives to identified injustices. Madalena-Berlin is part of the Madalena International Network.
Theatre of the Oppressed is an aesthetic method committed to the transformation of reality, created by the Brazilian theatre director Augusto Boal. Forum Theatre is an aesthetical representation of a real problem. The audience is invited to come on stage to intervene, suggesting alternatives in order to transform the staged reality. Madalena International Network is composed by female theatre groups from Latin America, Europe and Africa who promote discussion and concrete actions for women’ rights.
NO means NO!
With the Forum-Theatre play “NO means NO”, which explores the social construction of the idea of gender and this construction’s concrete consequences, Madalena-Berlin intends to expand the public discussion around the current European debate of: “women’s NO”.
Madalena-Berlin will start a Legislative Theatre campaign “NO means NO” in partnership with several groups of the Ma(g)dalena International Network. Each group will produce own piece about the same topic to promote local discussion and mobilization.
In the Legislative Theatre process, the public attends a Forum Theatre piece and, in addition to the usual participation at the Forum session, is invited to submit written suggestions for the creation, modification and/or cancellation of laws related with the topic represented on stage. For the Legislative Theatre, each group has to be supported by a team of experts, professionals and activists in the topic represented, to analyze the input from the audience members. At the end of theatrical event, a general summary based on the proposals has to be made. The team provides information to help the process of discussion and opens a discussion round for the audience members to exchange their perspectives. At the end of the debate, the audience decide if they agree with a common proposal as an alternative to the problem presented.
The Theatre Groups will share information during the process, and articulate concrete actions, leading up to an in-person meeting at the Seminar and European Festival "NO means NO" to be held September 2017 in Berlin.
